Our Screech Owl box is designed to provide a safe and lasting home for your owl friends. Our Screech Owl box is designed to provide a safe and lasting home for your owl friends. The design accomodates both the Eastern and Western Screech Owls.
Features
The box is 28" in total height, with 18" to 21" of interior height (18" at the lowest point of the sloped roof). This gives the owls plenty of space to "hunker down" and avoid predators.
The entrance is 4" high and 7 1/2" wide and is protected with a 2 1/2" roof overhang. The inside of the roof can be treated with paraffin wax to dissuade bees from using the box.
The box can be cleaned out by backing out one screw at the bottom front. The bottom then tilts downward, allowing old material to fall away. To prepare the box, simply close and fasten the bottom, then drop some fresh bedding in through the owl opening. This is an easy process which doesn't require you to take down the box every year.
The bottom of the box also is slotted around the edges, allowing for plenty of drainage. This helps to keep the bedding dry.
Finally, slots are cut into the inside of the entire length of the front. This makes it easier for owls to climb out of their nest.
Construction
The Owl Box is fully assembled and made of all new materials using our high-quality construction techniques, including:
- All roof joints sealed with GE Silicone II.
- Box is stained with Olympic Penetrating Oil Toner, which carries a 3 year warranty.
- Assembled using premium deck screws. Fasteners have a 10 year warranty.
Four mounting holes are pre-drilled in the unit, making installation easier. The Owl Box should be mounted using long (3" or greater) Aluminum nails or Exterior Grade Screws. Screws are included with your purchase. In addition, a larger (3/8" hole) is drilled toward the top. This allows you to attach a small diameter rope (clothesline) to haul the unit into the tree. Mounting recommendations and fasteners are included with your purchase.

Options
Some customers may choose to stain the Owl Box themselves, or leave the wood to naturally age. You can purchase the Owl Box unstained at a substantial discount. Note that unstained Pine is very light and will not blend into the surroundings until it has aged (at least a season). You may wish to camouflage the box by spraying it with black or gray paint. The Canyon Brown stained version will blend into most dark trees without additional treatment.
